Climbing Frames – Wednesday Adventurer

October 12th, 2011

We believe in encouraging adventure and exploration. We work hard to ensure that our climbing frames, play equipment, swings, trampolines do just that. We’re not sure whether he had a climbing frame or swing set himself, but Roald Amundsen was an inspirational explorer.

A fairly long time ago (1872) in Borge, Norway, Roald Engebreth Gravning Amundsen was born. As a teenager Roald had become fascinated with English explorer John Franklin and had dreamed one day of becoming an explorer himself. In 1899 he became a sea captain and in 1910 set sail for the North Pole, planning to be the first to reach it. However just before setting sail he received word that fellow explorer, Robert Peary had actually beat him to it. Not the type to be easily defeated Roald continued with his expedition, telling only his brother that the course had changed and they were now heading for the South Pole. On December 14th, 1911 Roald and his team reached their destination, beating a British team under Captain Scott by four weeks.

Roald is clearly not afraid of a little cold weather (temperatures get as low as -74 degrees Fahrenheit in the South Pole) so he would love any Climbing Frames UK playset as they can be used all year round. Playing in the snow is one of winter’s great joys. Many think a climbing frame is just for warmer months but it is great to get everyone in the garden when the snow falls too. The Ridgeview is fantastic value and has everything you could want from a climbing frame. A true adventurer needs monkey bars, rock wall, wavy slide, swings and a glider. In fact they would expect nothing less.

Wednesday Adventurer – Jonathan Trappe.

September 28th, 2011

This week’s adventurer comes with a definite ‘Don’t try this at home’ warning. Brave and slightly bonkers adventurer, Jonathan Trappe, has managed to travel across the Alps.

Jonathan Trappe

American Adventurer Jonathan Trappe

The Alps

Trappe travelled 94 miles across the Alps and reached altitudes of 15, 000ft.

‘Well that’s not that adventurous,’ ‘I could do that!’ I hear you cry. But could you do it using just helium balloons? Having already crossed the English Channel using the same method of transport, trained pilot Jonathan wanted to try his hand at being the first ever person to cross the European mountain range.

It took the quirky adventurer, originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, almost twelve hours and 54 gas-filled balloons to go from Gap in the South-East France to the Italian town of Andezeno.

The trip was a total of 94 miles and Jonathan reached awesome heights of 15, 000ft. “The most enjoyable part of the trip was also the most terrifying. At one point I thought I was heading straight for a Monte Viso,” he said. “My altimeter told me I was clear of it but my eyes told me I was going to slap into it and in that moment I was really scared. In the end I sailed right past it without a problem, which was just exhilarating.”

This mode of transport, known as cluster ballooning, is relatively new and was started back in 1982 by American, Larry Walters. By attaching 42 helium filled weather balloons to a patio chair, he managed to rise 15, 000ft into the air.  The highest altitude reached via cluster ballooning was 18,300ft by Mike Howard and Steve Davis back in 2001.

Trappe would buy: The Summerville Climbing Frame

The Summerville Climbing Frame would suit the quirky adventurer perfectly

Someone with such a love for vibrant colours needs the bright spiral slide. The spiral is a little different from the normal straight slide and we know that Trappe loves doing things differently. The enclosed higher lever playhouse also bears a resemblance to the house Trappe sent soaring into the air, shown in the picture above. With the wave rock wall, open lower level cubby with café style opening and room for 2 belt swings and a 2 child glider this climbing frame was made for someone who loves fun and loves excitement.

Can you think of other fun and bizarre ways to travel?

Climbing Frames – one way to tackle child obesity

September 23rd, 2011

Dealing with a very sensitive subject like child obesity is tricky. One way to approach the subject without hurting feelings would be to encourage more outdoor play without the mention of weight loss or diet.

Chips

One American restaurant has now given chips a PG certificate

Highlander Climbing Frame

More outdoor play could help reduce child obesity

A lot has been said in the press over recent months about child obesity. It is a sensitive subject that most of us don’t really want to broach. However in the US, First Lady Michelle Obama has made it her personal mission to reduce what has been called an ‘epidemic’. Today 1 in 3 children in America are classed as obese, and her Let’s move! campaign is a step towards curing this. This is a very similar approach to our own change 4 life initiative, launched back in 2008, which encourages healthy eating and an increase in activity.

However, one restaurant in America has taken the initiative one step further by putting a PG rating on chips. Darden restaurants, who own several chains across the US, have banned children form ordering the popular food without parental permission. Do you think this is the right approach? Should we adopt the same tactics here in England?

Here at Climbing Frames UK our job is to encourage as much outdoor play as possible. It is common sense that having children sat in front of the television or computer for hours on end is doing nothing for their health. Child obesity is a touchy subject and no parent ever wants to put their child on a diet or restrict their food so an easier option is to encourage more play and more movement.

This weekend’s, ‘weekend special’, the Highlander Multi-Level Climbing Frame Swing Set, is just £899 and has a 3 position swing beam with 2 belt swings and a 2 child glider, rockwall, step ladder, spiral slide and multi-level playhouse, which allows for a variety of activities and movements. It’s the perfect way to encourage more exercise sensitively and with no bribery, begging or cajoling needed.

The Spice Girls buy from Climbing frames UK

September 21st, 2011

Or at least this is what we think they would buy.

Harper Beckham's Georgian mansion playset

The Georgian Mansion is perfect for little Lady Beckham

The Crooked Treehouse Multiplay System

This kooky Crooked Treehouse Multiplay System was made for Scary Spice's 3 girls

So, you have just had a new baby.  You already have a few children in the family and have decided the time is right to purchase an outdoor play system to keep them all occupied.  If you are seeing similarities with this then you are in the same position as 2 Spice Girls!!!

When you need to pick a frame for your growing brood, you will be using criteria that ensures you can satisfy several needs:

  • Price
  • Size
  • Play Features

Price is key, price generally is the starting point to any purchase.  Here on Climbing Frames, there is a wide range of price points suited to all pockets.  With the starting price point of the Andorra Climbing Frame, a beatufully crafted double swing beamed play system, with 3 ft deck height, a combination rockwall/stepladder and a tarpauline roof, this is an ideal starter frame for your young ones.  Moving up to a Crooked Treehouse Multiplay, which is a bespoke build, manufactured from scratch to your specifications within 6-8 weeks, there really is no reason to shop anywhere else.

Size is also a major decision making element.  Whether you own a terrace, a semi or detached, we all own a piece of grass big enough to build a playsystem on.  With the smallest set measuring only 3 x 3m2, this is a big enough area to get your little ones out in the garden playing on a play system.  If you are lucky enough to have a larger garden area, one of  biggest frames measures, 9 x 7m.    All frames have the same basic play features, so whatever the space available, there will be enough activity and fun for your little ones to play on/with.

Play Features is a also a key decision maker as ultimately the purchase is made to ensure your child/children are entertained enough within the garden alone or with friends and growing and building on important skills.  All of our play frames have the same basic elements.  Speedy slide ranging from a 1m to 3m, either a combination rock wall/stepladder or seperate ones.  A play fort covered either by a tarpauline roof or a wooden one.  Generally there is a sand play area situated beneath the playfort, although on some sets there is a cafe style playhouse option.  Generally all frames are set up for 3 position, although this is different depending on the set.  There are also monkey bars which are available as an added extra or included in the set.

So we have ticked all 3 boxes on your shopping list, so jump on the website and take a look at the available range!!

By jumping online and looking in the Climbing Frames tab, you can see the wide range of frames available and suitable for a smaller space.

The most popular by far would be the Meadowvale II.  With a 4ft deck height, 2 belt swings and trapzez bar, this really is an amazing starter frame for your family.  There is a 2.2m high railed speedy slide for them to scoot down on and a combination rockwall/stepladder and rockwall and rope ladder to climb straight back up with.  There is also a play area benaeath the fort which can be used for either sand or ball play.  Currently at an amazing price, it is a perfect climbing frame to entertain the kids.

There is also the magnificent Oriana Fort if you were looking purely for a cubby house and slide.  This fort deck sits at 4ft high from the ground, with a combination rockwall/stepladder to get up and a 2.2 high railed speedy slide to come doen on.  The fort is enclosed apart from a look out area and there is also a funky vinyl chalk board inside to keep them entertained.  As with most of the frames available, there is a play area beneath the fort suitable for sand or ball play.

There are lots of variation on the Oriana frame which can be seen on the Climbing Frames page including adds such as swings, monkey bars, gliders etc.

Take a look at the wide range of frames available which suit a smaller space without restricting play value.
