Climbing Frames UK & Forest Schools

February 2nd, 2012

For years we have been selling climbing frames and singing the praises of outdoor play. There are huge physical benefits to getting children out of the house and out of their comfort zone and it would seem that people are realising the great outdoors can also have huge educational benefits. The concept of Forest Schools is a Scandinavian one which focuses on nature and movement as a means of aiding child development.

Leaving stuffy and overheated classrooms behind offers children the chance to put learning into context. They have tangible objects and situations they can relate their learning. It may seem like a slightly scary concept to those who, quite understandably, equate learning with classrooms, pens and paper. However Forest Schools can improve children’s social skills, concentration, health, initiative and independence, considerably.

Lessons take place 36 weeks of the year for 1-2 hours at a time. A big part of the lessons is to introduce children to risk. Today’s world is one which children are wrapped in cotton wool and warned of the dangers of almost everything. Why venture out into the big bad world when they can sit comfortably in the safety of their own home and live a virtual life through technology? Forest Schools (and our climbing frames )work to combat this and encourage things like climbing trees. Climbing trees teaches the concept of meeting a challenge head on and overcoming it. Children learn a sense of achievement and ambition.

Here is a short video on what Forest schools actually are:

Do your children attend Forest Schools? What are your thoughts on them?

Climbing Frames UK are making friends fast

October 21st, 2011

We joined Facebook this summer with the hope of sharing our enthusiasm and love for outdoor play with people. Our climbing frames bring families joy for years and we wanted to connect with customers past and present to share in this. Whether it is a swing set, a trampoline or a wooden playhouse they all make a big difference to a household.

We would love to have as much input from our facebook friends as possible. We want to see pictures of your climbing frames newly built in your gardens, of your children practising on their trampoline or pottering around their new wooden playhouse. In just a few months we have grown our friends to a huge 445 and are so pleased to be hearing such positive feedback.

At the moment we have two great reasons to become our friend. The first is the Selwood Cottage competition, featured in our previous blog post, where any of our facebook friends can win the gorgeous wooden playhouse worth £399. The second reason is that we are willing to donate £200 to EACH, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospital, if we reach 1000 friends by xmas. We are more than confident that we will smash the target and simply wanted to raise as much awareness as possible for a worthy cause.

A little about the charity:

EACH provides much needed support and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions. Being based near Bury st Edmunds, Suffolk we wanted to focus on a local charity such as EACH who provide the care and support where ever the family wish – in their homes, in hospital or in one of their hospices in Ipswich, Milton and Quindenham.

We’re sure you would agree this is a fantastic cause and hope everyone will help us contribute to the £4.8 million they need to raise this year alone.

Climbing Frames – one way to tackle child obesity

September 23rd, 2011

Dealing with a very sensitive subject like child obesity is tricky. One way to approach the subject without hurting feelings would be to encourage more outdoor play without the mention of weight loss or diet.

Chips

One American restaurant has now given chips a PG certificate

Highlander Climbing Frame

More outdoor play could help reduce child obesity

A lot has been said in the press over recent months about child obesity. It is a sensitive subject that most of us don’t really want to broach. However in the US, First Lady Michelle Obama has made it her personal mission to reduce what has been called an ‘epidemic’. Today 1 in 3 children in America are classed as obese, and her Let’s move! campaign is a step towards curing this. This is a very similar approach to our own change 4 life initiative, launched back in 2008, which encourages healthy eating and an increase in activity.

However, one restaurant in America has taken the initiative one step further by putting a PG rating on chips. Darden restaurants, who own several chains across the US, have banned children form ordering the popular food without parental permission. Do you think this is the right approach? Should we adopt the same tactics here in England?

Here at Climbing Frames UK our job is to encourage as much outdoor play as possible. It is common sense that having children sat in front of the television or computer for hours on end is doing nothing for their health. Child obesity is a touchy subject and no parent ever wants to put their child on a diet or restrict their food so an easier option is to encourage more play and more movement.

This weekend’s, ‘weekend special’, the Highlander Multi-Level Climbing Frame Swing Set, is just £899 and has a 3 position swing beam with 2 belt swings and a 2 child glider, rockwall, step ladder, spiral slide and multi-level playhouse, which allows for a variety of activities and movements. It’s the perfect way to encourage more exercise sensitively and with no bribery, begging or cajoling needed.

10 Reasons Why Sun Is Good for Our Health

September 8th, 2010

Stone Age people knew the Sun brought life on Earth and that is why they used to worship it. The suns rays can heal and destroy, but unfortunately we seem to only hear about the latter nowadays, so i thought i’d redress the balance and give 10 good reasons why to enjoy the sun.

1. The sunlight kills microbes. That’s why it is important to put carpets, blankets and eiderdowns that cannot be washed regularly out in the sun. Exposure to the sun confers the skin a bright, healthy look and increased elasticity making it more resistant to infections and sun burning than an untanned one. Many skin diseases (dermatitis) can be controlled and even cured through controlled exposure to the sun. The sun rays are proven to strengthen the immune system.

2. Due to the sun our mood improves! Sunlight helps in cases of chronic or acute depression, by stimulating the synthesis of endorphins (good-feeling hormones). That’s why we get depressed in the cold and dark days of the winter.

3. The sun is good against insomnia. Daytime exposure to sunlight increases the melatonin production during the night. This hormone helps regulate the sleep.

4. Under the action of the sunlight, the skin synthesizes vitamin D, which makes possible calcium absorption in the intestine, helping the organism grow strong bones. This way the sun prevents rachitis in both children and adults and osteoporosis in elders.

5. As vitamin D and some related compounds impede the development of some cancer cells, we can say the sun fights off this disease. Regular and controlled exposure to the sun has a preventive effect against cancer of colon, breast, leukemia and lymphomas.

6. Exposure to the sun strengthens the cardiovascular system. Blood circulation is improved, the pulse, arterial pressure, moderately high glycemia and cholesterol levels can be normalized.

7. Sun rays improve liver functioning, being effective in treating jaundice.

8. They help the kidneys with a part of their job, as the sun waves favor the elimination of waste products through the skin, when we sweat.

9. The sun also helps losing weight by increasing the metabolic rate through the stimulation of the thyroid. It also eases symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

10. The sun rays also ease the healing of the swollen joints during peaks of inflammation in cases of arthritis.

So all in all the sun is great! I know when i was younger i loved getting out, riding my bike and climbing trees. Now social pressures (and risks) prevent my children having the freedom we once had, but at least they can have the things we didn’t too – a garden full of outdoor toys, including a climbing frame, playhouse and trampoline.
