With 50% of our Climbing Frames having Monkey Bars we thought we would outline why monkey bar challenges provide a great addition to play activities, which have huge benefits for the children’s growth and maximises the frame to make a great piece of equipment in keeping the kids active for many years to come.
The Benefits of having Monkey Bars within your Climbing Frame are great, they improve the longevity of the frame by keeping the older kids active, we will give you some exercises the kids can try out, but also with the younger children it allows them to grow into the Monkey Bars and offers new challenges for them in the years to come.
When children are set a task and spend time attempting and eventually completing it they are learning how great it is to achieve something and this will hopefully spur them on to keep challenging themselves and keep aspiring to reach certain goals. Swinging above the ground can seem a little daunting at first but it is always great to encourage children to come out of their comfort zone and try new things, the Monkey Bars will provide them with what they need to push those boundaries.
It goes without saying that monkey bars add that little extra excitement to a climbing frame, however, as well as being great fun they also have huge health and learning benefits. Getting to grips with monkey bars teaches and improves coordination as well as strength. Monkey bars are fantastic for working upper body muscles which helps your kids with handwriting. Here are a few great exercises that use the monkey bars and can test and push your children to keep achieving those goals!
Monkey Bar Challenges
1. Basic (or Regular) Monkey Bars – This is a great basic move to get the kids core and grip strength.
If they struggle to do the Basic Monkey Bar movement, you may want to start with just a dead hang (working toward a single arm hang) or even step one hand forward and then bring the other hand to the same bar instead of swinging from one bar to the next. Or you can even help by holding their legs a bit to help take some of the weight off their arms.

2. Side Swing – The Side Swing is a very Basic Movement and may, for many kids, even be easier than the Basic Monkey Bars.
However, the Side Swing is a fun move to include that works the body in a different plane of motion. Even if you can do more advanced movements, you may want to include the Side Swing to work your control and muscle development in different areas of the body.
3. Skip-A-Bar – This is a harder variation of the basic movement because you have to perform a single arm hang as you reach to skip over a bar. This move will test their grip and lat strength even more!
4. Pull Ups – Playing on the Monkey Bars can improve your Pull Ups by increasing grip, back and core strength. So once the kids have built some strength and experience of using the bars you can push them further by getting them to attempt pull-ups. Again you can assist by taking some weight off by holding their legs, and there is a variety of pull-up exercises to try…
- Pull Up Grip – Palms facing away on the bar about shoulder-width apart.
- Chin Up Grip – Palms facing toward you about shoulder-width apart.
- Neutral Grip – Palms facing each other about shoulder-width apart.
- Wide Grip Pull Up – Palms facing away with your hands wider than shoulder-width.
- Close Grip Chin Up– Palms facing you with your hands closer than shoulder-width apart.
5. Monkey Bar Abs – A really fun exercise for the kids as it allows them to hang upside down- like a cheeky monkey! once hanging they then try and pull up their body using their core.
