Swing Sets and Frog Spawn

We are always rummaging around for some fun outdoor activities for little ones and spotted this fantastic idea on the Royal Horticultural Society website. Swing sets and frog spawn may not seem like the most obvious pairing but this recipe looked like too much fun not to share. This is great for kid’s birthday parties or for just surprising friends and family with an actual edible pond.

Hmmmm sounds dubious. But trust us.

What you will need for your edible pond:

  • 1 sachet of green jelly
  • 1 packet of blackcurrant jelly
  • A tin of tapioca pudding
  • Blue food colouring
  • Fruit bar
  • Hot water
  • Chocolate frog
  • Jelly insects
  • Spoon
  • Glass bowl
  • Jug
  • Scissors / knife
  • An adult to help with the boring bits.

What to do:

  1. First of all (with the help of a grown up) make the blackcurrant jelly and pour it into the glass bowl.
  2. Pop this in the fridge to set.
  3. When set take it out of the fridge and add a layer of jelly insects to the top of the blackcurrant jelly.
  4. Then make up half of the packet of green jelly (with the help of a grown up) and add a couple of drops of the blue food colouring.
  5. Leave it long enough to cool but not until it has set.
  6. Pour the cool green jelly over the blackcurrant jelly and layer of jelly insects.
  7. Put this in the fridge to set.
  8. Then using the fruit bar cut out shapes of leaves and reed. You will also need to cut the grapes in half (this can be tricky so ask an adult to help)
  9. Make up the rest of the green jelly and add a few drops of blue food colouring.
  10. Again leave until it has cooled but not set. Then pour this over the previous layer of jelly.
  11. Spoon on some frog spawn (tapioca pudding) and add your leaves and grapes to the surface. Place the reeds so they stick up in the air.
  12. Add the final touches of the remaining jelly insects and chocolate frog and you are done!

We would love to see pictures of your finished ponds and to hear your thoughts on what it actually tastes like. You can upload your pictures to our Facebook page.
